Transforming the World

Early Childhood Development

  • Preschool Education: As there are no public pre-schools in Rwanda, 198 congregations in Shyira Diocese currently provide pre-school instruction in their parish buildings 5 days a week in order to offer young children refuge from being strapped to their mother's back while she farms, or being cared for by barely older siblings. Instead, they are able to begin building the base of an education, preparing for their future.

  • Sonrise Boarding School: Founded in 2001 to provide orphans of the 1994 genocide a place to live and learn alongside students from stable homes, Sonrise is recognized today as a premier nursery, primary, and secondary education institution in Rwanda.
  • Muhabura Integrated Polytechnic College: MIPC is a technical institution that aims to serve the vocational education needs of Rwanda by offering technical degrees such as construction, accounting, and hospitality.

Economic Empowerment

  • Mother's Unions - 96 cooperatives throughout Shyira Diocese operate women's ministries to support and empower marginalized women through economic initiatives and skills training.
  • Savings and Credit Schemes: In partnership with HOPE International, Shyira Diocese offers savings and credit training to 700 different community groups, helping members understand benefits of cooperative saving and lending. Additionally, the Diocese provides small amounts of seed money to help launch the groups.

Community Health

Working with the Rwandan Ministry of Health, Shyira operates two health centers in Gakenke and Burera districts. The centers see 70-80 patients a day, with their biggest services going toward pre- and post-natal care, family planning and reproductive health counseling, and treating intestinal infections.

WASH Initiatives

One of the biggest health issues in Rwanda is contaminated water that leads to infections such as cholera and giardia. Shyira is diligently working to fight these diseases by installing water tanks to parishes through the diocese. The tanks collect and store rain water, providing the community free access to clean water throughout the year.

Nutrition and Agriculture

  • OneEgg: In partnership with the organization OneEgg, children at 31 schools receive an egg everyday in order to combat protein malnutrition.
  • Container Gardens: Our church mobilization team and community organizers work hard to teach rural Rwandans how to best grow their own fruits and vegetables to feed and sustain their families.
